Description

“A word is only as great as the note it sits under, and Jule Styne has given me and all the ‘word-people’ the greatest notes” – Sammy Cahn

A piano prodigy, Jule Styne performed with the Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit Symphonies by the age of 10. He dreamed of being a concert pianist, but his teacher discouraged him from pursuing classical music, saying his hands would never be big enough. Luckily, for us songbook singers, he turned to popular music and became one of the most talented composers of the American Songbook!

A versatile songwriter, Styne was equally successful on Broadway as he was in Hollywood. He is considered the ultimate composer when it comes to writing to suit the talents of specific singing stars. He tailored Gentlemen Prefer Blondes to Carol Channing, Gypsy to Ethel Merman, Funny Girl to Barbra Streisand, and Bells Are Ringing to Judy Holliday. No one could write a melody to a dramatic situation the way Styne could. And, he collaborated with some of the best lyricists around – Sammy Cahn, Betty Comden & Adolph Green, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Merrill, Leo Robins and E.Y. Harburg.

This Jazz Kings concert will be filled with many of our favorite show stoppers: “Just In Time”, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, Don’t Rain On My Parade”, “It’s Magic”, The Party’s Over”, “Time After Time”, “Make Someone Happy”, “Put ‘Em In A Box”, “Three Coins In The Fountain”, “I’ve Heard That Song Before” and of course, “Give Me A Song With A Beautiful Melody”.

Please join us in the artistry, genius and magic of Jule Styne.
